Looking to replenish its roster after its three leading scorers entered the transfer portal, Belmont received commitments from two transfers, Carter Whitt from Furman and Brody Peebles of Liberty.

Whitt is a 6-3 guard who also played at Wake Forest for two seasons; he’ll have one season of eligibility. Whitt was ranked as one of the top 100 players in the country coming out of high school in Raleigh, N.C.

He’s had an inconsistent college career. As a freshman at Wake, he started 10 games and averaged 4.7 ppg. The following season he did not start a game and averaged only 1.7 ppg. He transferred to Furman, but wasn’t a big contributor, averaging 2.5 ppg.

He played a much larger role this past season, paying all 33 games with 15 starts. He moved into starting lineup in mid-December and then went back to a substitute role in February.

He played 23.5 minutes per game, scoring 7.9 ppg with a 39.5 shooting percentage, 27 percent on threes. He did average 3.5 assists per game and was an 84 percent free throw shooter. His final game as a Paladin was a 20-point effort against Samford in the Southern Conference Tournament.

That shows the potential Belmont needs him to fulfil.

Peebles, known as a shooter, was essentially a substitute for the 18-14 Flames. A 6-2, 170-pound guard, he played 21.4 minutes per game, averaging 10.7 ppg while hitting 45.4 percent of his shots overall and 33.6 of his threes. He also had only 22 assists versus 25 turnovers.

He played high school basketball at Hartselle in Alabama where he ‘scored over 3,000 points,’’ according to his bio on the Liberty web site. It’s unclear why there’s no exact total.

In his freshman season, he averaged 5.4 ppg and followed that up with 7.4 ppg his sophomore season.

Belmont lost guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie, forward Cade Tyson and center Malik Dia to the portal along with substitute guard Kyler Vanderjagt. Gillespie announced his commitment to Maryland this week.
