Belmont’s newest addition, Jonathan Pierre, excelled at D2

Coach Casey Alexander is going to have to get the measuring tape out for his latest addition out of the transfer portal, Jonathan Pierre from Memphis.

Pierre is listed at 6-9 on the Memphis web site but Bluff City Media was writing that he was 6-10 in stories in March. Pierre is a late-bloomer who was only 6-2 as a high school senior. We’ll see what his height is in the Belmont preseason information guides.

To gauge how he might help Belmont, Bruins fans will have to look back two seasons when Pierre played at Division 2 power Nova Southeastern in Florida because he did very little at Memphis last season.

He played 19 games but only scored 35 points, averaging 6.1 minutes per game.

The season before, however, is notable as started for Nova, the Division 2 national champion with a 36-0 record. He averaged 14.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, and 3.4 apg while shooting 50 percent overall, 40.6 from three and 81.9 from the foul line.

In his freshman year, he came off the bench and averaged 4.1 for a 31-1 team. He’ll have one year left at Belmont.

Upon entering the transfer portal in March, he seemed realistic when he spoke with Bluff City Media, saying, “[I plan on] staying in the mid-major level and just finding the right situation for me so I can continue my basketball career at the highest level. I just felt like it was the best opportunity for me to put my name in the transfer portal and find a new home, so I can find myself new opportunities and put myself in the best situation to achieve my end goal—eventually being a pro. And Memphis wasn’t the best situation for me to do that.’’
