Vanderbilt transfers shaping up as good group

Mark Byington has been working hard.

New Vanderbilt coach Mark Byington has quickly put together an interesting and potentially good group from the transfer portal.

He was especially busy the last few days, adding guard Grant Hoffman from Davidson, guard Jason Edwards from North Texas and forward Devin McGlockton from Boston College.

Combine those with previous portal arrivals, Tyler Nickel and M.J. Collins from Virginia Tech and Jalen Carey from James Madison plus returning players Ven-Allen Lubin and JaQualon Roberts and suddenly a team is taking shape.

There are also two incoming freshman guards, Tyler Tanner and Karis Bilal. Byington still has three more scholarships left.

Of the recent additions, Edwards from North Texas is a player who should quickly have an impact offensively. He led the Mean Green at 19.2 points per game and he’s not shy, hosting up 505 shots, which is 177 more than Ezra Manjon, Vandy’s leader, took last season. He also made 84 threes while Evan Taylor led Vandy with 45 last season. He’s a volume scorer as he hits at a 42.6 rate. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Huffman, a graduate transfer, plays a smart game and would be a good candidate to start at point guard. He averaged 5.2 assists last season with a game that emphasized penetration. He only connected on 26 percent of his three-point shots.

McGlockton is a 6-7 forward who is known for his toughness. He once was a Vanderbilt football recruit. The best part of his game is around the basket. He started every game, averaging 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds while converting 57.5 percent of his shots. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
